About three months ago I moved into temporary accommodation at a friend's house in Flying Fish Point. Over the last 25 years I have visited this area on a fairly regular basis, but always only for short trips.

Some long time members of the community have decided to support the survey and help me with the organisation. I thank them for their help.

I will conduct the group discussions (first part of the survey) myself and will audio record them. None of the recordings will be published. They are used exclusively for my personal data analysis and report writing.

Subsequent face to face interviews will be conducted by me and some local community members.

Why a community survey:

During talks with some of my local friends it was suggested I undertake a survey to explore the extent to which the communities of Flying Fish Point and The Coconuts participate/engage in any community activity, and how satisfied they are with the current level of activity, amenities and services in the area.

Importantly, we also want to explore what other activities, services, amenities the community would regard as desirable for the area.

These explorations should cover issues like

Leisure activities
Single purpose events (like the Australia Day breakfast)
Commercial services, like the café, the Caravan Park,
The local B & B
Community services like cleaning, maintenance, coastline preservation
Emergency services – weather related
The local area as a tourist destination
Sporting activities

My main objective with this research will be to provide the communities with some structured feedback based on independent, neutral research reflecting the opinions and attitudes of a representative cross section of the communities.

The research will also be of interest to the local council, existing local enterprises and businesses which may wish to extend their activity in this area some time in the future.

When will the survey take place

We are planning on conducting the survey during February and May 2013.
It will be executed in two steps: first group discussions, then followed by some structured interviews.

My friends in the community were kind enough to organise for me the use of the CWA Hall for the purpose of holding the group discussions there.

Once the group discussions have been done, I shall finalise the structured questionnaire and my friends and I will go through the community in order to speak with individual members of the community for a short while, and go through the interview. This will take approximately 25 minutes.

In some instances time constraints might prevent us from doing the interview face to face. In those cases, we would like to leave a questionnaire behind with randomly selected members of the community and would ask you to return the completed questionnaire to a collection box at the CWA Hall in Flying Fish Point.

All the data collection – group discussions and structured interviews – will be processed in complete anonymity. That means it will not be possible from the aggregated results to draw any conclusions relating to individuals in the community.
